Last week, while discussing the 1939 Register, a major new online census-type resource for England and Wales, we briefly touched on access to the Scottish records from it. These have been made available through Freedom of Information, but the whole database is not available for searching. Instead, requests have to be made for information on individuals. This costs £15 per request, and a copy of the individual's death certificate also has to be supplied, in compliance with Data Protection provisions. There is further guidance and a link to the request form on the National Records of Scotland website, here: http://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/guides/national-register

Here as promised are a few extra documents and links that were discussed in class yesterday.
The documents are examples of an Ancestral Chart and a Family Group Sheet, and also a computer-generated Pedigree Chart from the Family Tree Maker programme, using the Pearson family as an example.

This week we will be catching up on the basics of the major websites, then we will focus on census records and also take a look at producing reference citations for your genealogy work. Here are the handouts for the week 2 class, and also an example of a previous student's final assignment (without its ancestral chart).

Hello and welcome to the online resource for students on the course Family History Research: An Introduction, running at the Centre for Lifelong Learning from January to March 2016. This is where you will find electronic copies of all the course handouts, and some additional materials to help you begin your family history research.
The handouts for week 1 are available here now for download, and each week's new handouts will be posted here shortly before each class. Print copies will also be distributed in class.
I'm looking forward to teaching the class, and I hope you will all find it an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
Best wishes,
Judith
