'The near abroad' is a term used by some Russian Nationalists (including Vladimir Putin) for areas that were once part of the Soviet Union, and before that, the Russian Empire.
We're going to look at literary engagements with identity and nationality within Europe, and in particular, with empire and colonialism in Ireland, Britain, Ukraine and Russia.
While we'll be using some relevant terminology in the analysis, these are all complex subtle texts.
